Day 3: In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

The whole of the movie Labyrinth really spoke to me as a young teen (which explains a lot about me, whoops), but I especially love the ending scene where Sarah finally confronts the Goblin King and declares, "My will is as strong is yours, and my kingdom is as great. You have no power over me!" I've always loved how you could see her remember the line and at the same time realize that it was true, and I've always loved how much power she suddenly has in that moment. She's had it all along, really, but now she knows it.

I've contemplated getting it tattooed on me.

I totally love Labyrinth but I have completely the opposite reaction to that scene. When I watched the movie as a child, I could not fathom why Sarah would want to go back to the real world. I thought it would have been much better to stage a coup somehow. Although, in a way, she did. She got to keep her friends from the Labyrinth in the real world.

This is such a good moment, one of my favorites of the film. In fact there was a thing going around Twitter today about useless knowledge you have stuck in your brain and I quoted this exact part. I've had those lines memorized for years.

"My will is as strong as yours and my kingdom as great." That line especially has always been REALLY powerful for me, this what fifteen year-old girl standing up to this powerful, magical being and stating that his will wasn't any stronger than her own. And said with such confidence. Really amazing.

Based on this alone (and your Transistor icon) I feel like we should be friends.

I once had rather a bit of an epiphany starting with this particular scene and working backwards through the whole film about metaphors and allegories and interpretations and representations and what have you, and it was SO CLEAR and absolutely sense-making, bringing a whole new level to the film for me. And when I wanted to write it down to share this discovery with my friend who shared my Labyrinth-y love, it was all gone again. I could absolutely feel it just evaporating right out of my brain. I still wish I could remember what it was. And I had arguments and everything for it all. It was about the transition from childhood to adulthood, which is fairly obvious, with Sarah tidying her room at the end and passing Lancelot on, but so many elements in the film that represented various difficulties teenagers have with this transition, even the worm for goodness sake, and Jareth himself being a manifestation of something else and ARGH I can't remember!. But it all sprang from precisely this moment, and so I totally get why that's your favourite bit. :)
